Aerosol extinction is roughly proportional to the total aerosol mass.
The "normalization region" is required as a reference for the
extinction calculation. Black regions in the images represent a loss of
instrument sensivity, usually due to extinction of the laser beam by
optically-thick clouds. Anything that looks like a vertical stripe is a
measurement retrieval artifact, and should be ignored.
