Bacscatter Coefficient is the measure for the amount of light scattered in direction that the beam came from. The "normalization region" is required as a reference for the backscatter calculation. Dark navy blue regions in the images represent either a loss in signal or the signal being below the set minimum threshold for the plot. Anything that looks like a vertical stripe is a measurement retrieval artifact, and should be ignored.
